Wise Creatures: a unique book about hauntings

Wise Creatures is a standalone young adult paranormal written by Deirdre Sullivan that was published in 2023.

Summary

At only 6-years-old Daisy was a child psychic where the ‘wise creatures’ in the walls whispered secrets to her. But now, at 16, she tries not to think about her past too much – her mysterious parents are forgotten and Daisy has left her past behind.

She now lives a relatively normal and happy life with her aunt and her cousin, Nina, and only occasionally wonders about the blank spaces in her memories. But one day, something about Nina changes. She’s keeping a secret that she won’t tell anyone … and then Nina begins to hear the voices in the walls again and it seems that this time they want both Daisy and Nina.

What I Liked
  • Daisy: I really loved the main character, Daisy. I felt for her the entire book and she had me feeling so sad as she really goes through a lot for her entire book.
  • Sister/cousin relationship: The main character has a close and lovely relationship with her cousin that she has grown up with. They’ve lived together almost their whole lives and they consider each other sisters. I adored their relationship and how much each was willing to do for each other. I need more books like this!
  • People are haunted, not buildings: It’s such a cool concept! I really enjoyed the idea that it’s people that are haunted rather than places.
  • The writing: I enjoyed the writing and formatting of the book. It’s almost lyrical and lovely to read. The audiobook was a great way to experience this!
  • Irish setting: There’s just something special about paranormal/magical books that are set in Ireland or written by Irish authors. I don’t know what it is but I enjoy them every single time I read them.
  • Plot twists: There are no, like, MAJOR plot twists in this book but it definitely had some that took me by surprise.
What I Didn’t Like
  • The ending: I’m not really sure how I feel about the ending. I kind of feel like it wasn’t clear enough about what was going on and that was probably the point but I wasn’t the biggest fan.
Overall Thoughts

Wise Creatures is a really interesting and unique book about hauntings that I really enjoyed. It reminded me of books like House of Hollow and All Our Hidden Gifts. I’m sure it will be a book that many people love as there wasn’t much I disliked about it at all. However, the writing style will probably not be for everyone so maybe look at a sample before trying it!
